Actually, on most later model engines, the voltage regulation function is handled by the engine control computer. Whether a 2002 model did it that way, I couldn't say. Older model GM products did indeed use a regulator that was built in to the alternator, while Ford and Dodge vehicles still had separate voltage regulators. You could buy the GM regulator as a separate part if you were willing to disassemble the alternator to replace it. (I used to sell auto parts.)
Bottom line to the original poster, you may not have a separate voltage regulator.
