Locking gas cap

Still have mine from the last spike but this is a good reminder ??
A bit bummed that a trip doesn't seem to be in the books this year, but maybe that's a blessing in disguise... it'll certainly be interesting where prices go.

Going OT; The first locking cap I bought was for a pickup that was rarely used. All my drivers had permission to use it if needed. Just make sure had 1/4 tank of gas, and park over pan when get back. The door key, and the gas cap key lived on a hook in shed. The ing key hangs on the dipstick tube. I buy the oil, but make sure it's full before you start it.

They just drill a hole in the tank these days.. Most "newer" rigs have a gizmo in the filler neck to keep a siphon hose from getting down the throat. At least my 97 F150 had one and I think even my 86 Mustang GT had one.

Watch your cat converters too... Those are still 'hot' items these days..

Some 1/4" steel plate under your fuel tank would serve better. Siphoning fuel is soooo 90s in the meth community...
Good luck, I feel your pain. Have a construction project in Spocompton, WA (Spokane). Tweakers are all equipped with Harbor Freight cordless grinders and drill now!
Another plus for driving a diesel, that many haven't considered, lol.
Tweakers can't afford diesels, so they basically only steal gas. We even had small engines tanks siphoned dry. 2 quarts of gasoline is now worth $2.50!

Atlanta PD just arrested a guy going around punching holes in the bottom of tanks to steal gas.

I also use locking gas caps on 3 trucks, but they are easy to break off with a screwdriver. YouTube post many videos of how to do this and it works in less than a minute. Not too noisy unless they also use a hammer. I have done it when lost a key.

Years ago someone was repeatedly stealing my sons gas from his Ranger when he was at college in Austin. A locking cap didn't help. One day he continually smelled gas while driving.

He took it to a shop and discovered the float assembly was not properly attached. The thief was removing the float and siphoning from there. The mechanic put a metal band around the tank that blocked the float assembly. The problem stopped.

Not only is it easy, but they couldn't care less about how much paint damage the do taking it off. Cheaper in the long run to just let them take the gas.

Good point. Like locking your vehicle.
On jobsites with theft issues, we leave job trucks unlocked. Beat's replacing a window or punched in door lock, etc, just for the thief to find nothing of real value.
Not sure what treasure they think is left on the side of a freeway in a dirty old pickup with a couple pairs of used gloves, some earplugs and a grungy safety vest maybe laying on the seat.
