You were lucky, I guess, if you have standard 20 lb. tanks. The max container size is 10 lbs. (max 10, 10 lb. containers per vehicle). Motorhomes with fixed tanks are definitely out (mine's 80 lbs.).
With regard to the route itself, as someone else said I-95 just plain sucks from NY to DC, and then again as you get to SC. I haven't done the trip in a few years now, but we would usually leave our Northern-NJ home around 1-2 AM so we can cruise through the heavy traffic areas before the masses get there. If you make the trip non-stop, that does put you in the Myrtle Beach area in the early-afternoon timeframe which you don't want to do on a Saturday (rental house move-in time).
