Looking for a Mr. Buddy Heater

I have no experience when it comes to portable propane heaters but I know that you need a California version if you live here. Which one (model) is the best and how much time can I get from a cannister - give or take. The two versions I find on Amazon are both Mass and Calif safe: MX9-BX ($99.81 at Amazon) and the MH18B ($154.19 also at Amazon) Any kind of input will be helpful in helping me decide.

  • Have a regular and a Big Buddy. Big will suck up two tanks on high in no time. Get a hose adaptor or a bottle refill adaptor. Be aware that neither one will work at high altitudes, ironically were I needed one most. LOL.
  • What I'm looking for is a small, portable propane heater to take the chill off the air in the morning in my TT. Not to heat it for any length of time and not overnight. I'd use my regular TT heater for any duration of length.

This is strictly to take the chill out of the air in the mornings or right before bed for 10 minutes or so.

    Thanks mowermech, will do!

How many sq ft area and how cold? I had an MH12T in a 24 foot TT and didnt like it at all. The other issue is condensation and no thermostat and breathing the fumes. We notice that our sinus become plugged and we do have windows open for ventilation. I know you didnt ask for all this but if you are thinking long term I would research it.

As Pianotuna said, platinum cat is the top of the line as far as I can find. I will probably put one in my fifth wheel. Low amp draw and vented and thermostat.

Thanks, as to pianotunas and your info, I will be checking this unit out before I commit to buying anything.

I own the Mr Heater Portable heater. It works quite well. It uses one small tank of propane, which is refillable if you have the adaptor. If you want, Ace hardware has the propane tanks on sale for $2.99 each.

They work with the 20# tanks if you use an extension hose and a filter.

I looked on the internet this morning and saw that Dick's Sporting has the Mr Heater Portable heater on sale for $89, and free shipping.

Thanks for these price tips. I'll check and see if they will ship to California (the California model or whatever)

  • Be sure to read and follow the instructions.
    Especially the ventilation warnings.
Failure to do so could KILL you!

  • Hi Frank,

I'd get the Platinum Cat instead. It is vented and has a proper thermostat.
  • California and Massachusetts and Canada have their own import and export rules in regards to the propane. I was talking about using a small cannister (the $6.00 kind you would use for a portable camp grill) The whole reason to get it is because its portability not to be tied down to a 20 pound lp tank.
  • Look at the BTU's they are different sizes.

Why would Calif care what heater you buy?

    From their FAQ's

    ...Question:
How long will my Mr. Heater burn on a 20-lb propane cylinder?

    Answer:
It will vary according to which Mr. Heater you own. The following is a breakdown of burn time on high fire for units that run on a 20-lb propane cylinder. Mr. Heater does not recommend using the following heaters on larger than 20-lb tanks:
    •MH9B : 48 hours
    •MH12T : 36 hours
    •MH12C : 36 hours
    •MH24T : 18 hours
    •MH42T : 10 hour
