Looking to buy new tires for motorhome

Unless you drive an awful lot of miles, there is no need to replace four year old tires.

The rule of thumb for trailers is seven years, MHs can go a lot longer.

Most class A mh owners replace the tires at 5-7 years. I just got a set if Firestone tires for the steer axle. Replaced Michelin that were 4 years old and had several sidewall cracks. I have only driven 100 miles on the FS but I think they will be as good as Michelins were and they were about $400 less for the two. You don't wear out mh tires, you age them out.

we replaced our 7-8 yr old tires on our previous MH with the goodyears. they gave us great service. our new MH came with Michelin's and so far, so good but I wish they were goodyears.

Before you purchase Goodyears, do a search on "Goodyear G670".

Why are you limiting to only Goodyear and Michelin? Toyo, Yokohama, and my personal choice, Hankook will ride and last just as well for about half the cost.

I'm also a little perplexed as to why you want to change out at four years. To each his own, I guess.

I have 2 year old Michelins on ours and they are already starting to crack. Michelin's warranty excludes this problem. I won't buy another overated Michelin

I ran my last set on the motorhome 13 years. They were Michelin and I store it indoors with the tires on metal to stop moisture from migrating up out of the floor to cause dry rot. Finally earlier this year some minute cracks began to show up. Replaced them.

Four years is really not that bad unless they are severely dry rotted or sun damaged. If you do go for new though I would suggest you look at Hankook,& Toyo, along with some others like Firestone and General. With Michelins pricing and some fairly recent problems on their XRV they got to rich for my blood. Don't let the naysayers keep you from looking at some of the Chinese tires. They are making many of the name brand stuff in China now. There are several Chinese brands being used in Europe and Canada that are beginning to make their way into the U.S. One that comes to mind is sold at Loves truck stops. Name is Aeolus. Has a good tread wear guarantee. I don't know of anyone who has them yet.

I replaced my 22.5 after 7 years and they had very little cracking on them....My friend replaced his 22.5 after 9 years and his has more obvious cracking.

Neither of us had any problems with the tires and travel cross country for months.

I replaced my Michelin with more Michelin through FMCA program and saved several hundred dollars on a set of 6.

The reason I posted on this thread was to get some advice about tires on our motorhome. This is the first motorhome we have had. We are seasoned campers with fifth wheel campers driving an F350 truck. I just want to be safe than sorry. I was not sure if I should change tires because of age. I have always looked for cracks in the side walls after several years of service and if I did see cracking I changed the tires. This is new territory for me with a very large motorhome that weighs over 30,000 pounds GVW. So I decided to see what advice I would get.

Go to the FMCA site and look under tires, Tireman, a retired tire engineer has many postings on motor home tires. His advice along with many others is to replace tires sooner rather than later.

You might check the actual date on the tires for an exact age. Here's how to do it if you're not sure:

After you get an exact age then you can better judge when they should be replaced. If they look in good condition you can safely wait until they're 6-7 years old. Also make sure you're running them on the correct pressure.

We had Michelins on our 40' motorhome and were very satisfied with them. We replaced them at 6 years just before we drove for the summer to Alaska. They still looked fine but felt better doing so for this particular trip. As full-timers, we traveled constantly otherwise so the tires got a lot of use.
