I can laugh at this now, but fortunate to have proper working safety equipment. Each time I see a question like this I am reminded of how I learned that I had an auto change over regulator.
It was a cold and windy night boondocking. 20f and windy. 4 of us in the toy hauler. I awake at 3 am freezing. Heater not running. I must be out of propane. I check the stove, yep no gas. Shut off stove. Run outside, lift the propane cover, turn on light, yep red shown on tank indicator. Flip transfer knob, turn on gas, gas indicator goes green. Put cover back on, shut off light, go inside, heater turns on. All is good.
I fall back asleep until propane detector goes off. I Silence alarm, check stove, open door and wait. All is good, go back asleep.
Propane detector goes off. I silence alarm, check stove one more time, open door and wait. All is good, go back asleep
Propane detector goes off. I silence alarm, open door , air out, it got really cold quick, turn on lights, check stove, Opps stove is on low not off ( looked the same in the dark). All is good, but now it's 5:30. Turn on water heater, lie down and try to fall asleep, can't. Wake up take shower and head to work.
Kids slept in until noon.
I never smelled any propane.
