Sorry to hear that happened to you, along with kudos to you for handling the situation responsibly! :)
I usually use our SewerSolution, but when I do use the ol' stinky slinky I have gotten into the practice of pulling the gray water valve first very briefly, just long enough to send a surge of water down the so that I know the hoses will not come apart/leak/?, then I close the gray and open the black tank valve. When the black is done, I open the gray again to flush the hose.
With the SewerSolution, I always send the freshwater through it first, long enough to know there are no leaks, before I start opening the valves. That way, should something be amiss, there is only clean water in the hose so no mess.
As the bumper sticker says "Stuff Happens"...I just prefer if it didn't happen on me! LOL
