I see a lot of posts about cost comparison where people will say things like "I already own a vehicle that I can use as a toad, so that's no extra cost." As a former CPA I must comment about a concept called "opportunity cost". If you're comparing motorhome + toad vs. trailer + tow vehicle you can't accurately say that the toad is zero cost because the tow vehicle can also be used for commuting. You need to consider all the costs including the fact that maybe the tow vehicle burns more fuel or costs more to buy or service. But if someone is going to consider the cost of owning and maintaining the tow vehicle they must also consider the cost of owning and maintaining the toad in the comparison or it's not a true complete comparison of the costs.
