I'm a bit surprised that folks that sleep with a gun haven't mentioned the other important item to have in that situation -- a very bright (preferably heavy) flashlight to spotlight any suspected intruder. One of Jeff Coopers rules of gun safety is "identify your target, and what's behind it" -- spotlighting a family member may upset them but will keep you from making a tragic mistake.
And the fact that intruders don't always behave rationally is irrelevant, in either case (rational intruder, irrational meth head) you are better off equipped to possibly defend yourself than helpless.
I do agree that a noisy (doesn't have to be large) dog is really a great help in this kind of situation.
