Even a slight pull to the uphill side can help keep get the trailer back up onto the pavement as the tow vehicle backs up. What didn't help is that nobody "helping" seemed to have much of a clue. They didn't bother to turn the tow vehicle to follow the trailer and ended up wadding it onto the guardrail. They also should have tossed a coat over the cable and moved all of the gawkers away in case it broke.
