One morning I went downstairs to leave for the day and heard water running. I went into utility room and water was flowing from the top of the water heater. The water heater had rusted out right where the cold water inlet pipe comes in. It could have happened after I left, but was lucky to catch it before it did damage. When the plumber changed out the old for new wh, I had him install an additional pipe w/valve to drain whole house.
I now turn water off and drain if gone for more than 3 days. I also turn water heater electric off, too.
