Manufacturer model length vs actual tongue-tail length

For the purposes of towing, the length one should consider is the actual tongue to tail length, not the manufacturer's model length, correct?

For example mine is a 25QB but the measured tongue-tail length is 27' 5". And I'd use the second number in towing calculations.

I've already bought my TT and TV so this is more just for my edification.
  • No towing calculations take length into consideration, but whether to use one or two friction anti-sway devices is usually approximated using length. Overall length is important for camp site selection and ferry fees. If your tow vehicle is long or you tow doubles, additive lengths are important so you stay under maximum allowable where you plan to travel.
  • What towing calculations do you do that use the trailer length? Just curious.

  • If you look at the brochures there is usually a statement saying that the model number is only the model number and is not intended dsecribe the length of the camper.
  • Most TT manufacturers give model names/numbers which appear to be close to the box length. I would not assume the numbers in the model name relate to the length of the RV.
  • Model# and actual length will rarely be the same, on our rig we are nearly 4' longer.
  • Most model numbers have vague reference to to cabin size. If it is a travel trailer, add 3-4' for the tongue. My Weekend Warrior FB2200 was a 22' front bath toy hauler that was 26' in overall length due to the 4' tongue.
  • Use your measured length. Not all manufacturers use trailer model number to show trailer length. For example I have an Open Range 385RLS. The 385 stands for square feet of space inside.
  • Some manufacturers give the box length, others give the total length and include the tongue and bumper. (It's all over the place).

Makes sense to know the TOTAL length that I have to deal with behind my truck.
