It isn't unusual, sometimes a PROPER repair can only be done at the manufacturers facility or the selling dealer does not have proper training to handle the repair or cost of shipping a large part may be prohibitively expensive.
I have read more than one post over the years where someones trailer had to be hauled back to the manufacturer to have an entire wall or roof replaced.. Those kind of repairs would be difficult for a local small dealer shop to do..
As for "compensation" goes, I would ask or inquire politely to the manufacturer reps to see if they will "comp" you for your cost of fuel and time spent hauling there and back.. You might get lucky and they reimburse you for those expenses!
