Bingo! IMHO the piece-rate system is the root cause of the majority of quality issues found everywhere in the US. Homes, RV's, cars, & any other product assembled from components that require actual skills are at risk. (I've actually hired contractors & paid them extra to "slow down & do it right"...good practice but poor financial planning)
Add in the loss of education & training for industrial arts in our school system, a weakened/crumbling apprentice program, and the results should surprise no one.
Piece-rate workers set the schedule......
Management wants XX number of units by end of work day.
Work day ends when last unit is finished.
If finished at 1pm vs 4pm work day is over.
Plus there were a large majority of those workers high on meth and running was just the way they moved.........couldn't stand still if life depended on it and attention span was about ____________that long.
