I don't know if this is the right spot if not please do move my question. We are in the research phase of buying and have been trying to wade through the different manufactures. It seems to us like there are basically only a handful of floor plans being made by an awful lot of manufactures. So are they all owned or subsidiaries of just a couple of companies?

There are only a limited number of viable floor plans that can fit in the basically rectangular footprint of the typical RV, so brand to brand similarities should not be surprising. That said, there are a few "conglomerate" RV companies such as Forest River and Thor that make a variety of brands, models, and RV types, while others such as Tiffin, make only a few models of a given type.

There are a number of different companies. But really there are only so many configurations you can come up with on a rig that is 8' wide and 35'-40' long.

Hi,I've never understood why Murphy beds don't get more use in RV's. It would seem a great way to have more living space in the day time.

There are far more brands than companies, which might be part of this - especially if shopping at a single dealership. (Forest River and Thor both have quite a lot of brands ...) Many of these were independent companies before the recession but there's been a lot of consolidation.

There are a fair number of low-volume and direct-to-consumer independent manufacturers. The other list is of the major brands that you're more likely to find at a local dealership.

I updated the list thanks for the additional information. For new buyers we are finding this a little confusing.

If the big companies buy the little ones, why not integrate and cut down on the number of names and floorplans when so many are identical to each other? I applaud all of you that are seasoned and managed to make your way through the maze to find a good rv! We didn't expect it to be so hard to find one to buy.

There are realistic reasons for the majority of existing RV floorplans. But, it's easy to draw your dream floorplan and post it here so that we can tell you why it won't work...:B
We special-ordered our floorplan, and it's the best there is,....for us. It's a keeper alright.

And there are more: Northwood Rv's - Arctic Fox, Nash, and some other models. These came to mind because my sisters own their trailors:-)
