Metal Detector owners

Went to the CG this week. While we were in the office, an older gentleman came in to check the lost and found. He had lost his wedding ring, pretty upset. The camp host took his name/address. She said that someone would come once in a while and use a metal detector to look for lost items. Someone else had lost a wedding ring in May. The host said that the metal detector guy had not been by this year, yet. If I had one, I would take it camping with us. Sounds like a good service, if anyone on the forum has one.

    I don't know about other states but the Illinois state parks require you to obtain a permit from the park office before using a metal detector.

    Camperpaul - Any idea as to the logic behind Illinois state parks requiring the license?

    We only stay at one campground and we do use a metal detector for fun. The campground manager knows we have one and called us to action last year when someone lost their carkeys on the beach. Yep, we found 'em.

    I take mine with me everywhere I go.
    In West Virginia, to hunt in a state park requires the written permission of the director of state parks. Needless to say, that isn't easy to come by. However, if someone lost a ring or keys, for example, I doubt I would get thrown in jail for trying to find them for the owner.

    What does the permit allow or dis allow you to do and what is the basis for making you get one?

    I was just thinking of buying a detector. Didn't know you have to acquire permits to use them.

    Would they have told me that at the store I purchased it from?

    what is a decent "cheap" detector? don't want to find a civil war relic buried 6 ft down, but one foot maybe?

    Some decent detectors under $300 are the Tesoro Silver uMax and Garrett Ace 250.

    It is not a license, it's a daily permit.

    Many of the parks are located in historically significant areas and there are artifacts under the soil.

    e.g.

    Camp Logan (in IBSP) was a POW camp during the Civil War.

    Starved Rock SP was the scene of a siege.
    (The Ottawa and Pottawatomie starved out the Illini)

    Use of metal detectors at IBSP is only allowed on the beaches in the early morning (before 9:00AM) and the people using them are required to go to the park office and report what they found.
