mice in 2009 travel trailer - how to find and remove

we have a 2009 sunnybrrok 301rbs, there were mice in it while stored . we have it now at a service place in Regina, Sask. They indicate the smell is still there after cleaning, maybe dead mice somewhere . they have not removed grill to furnace nor looked in area where power cord is stored. How do I access those and any other areas to clean. ? email ken2@holliday.com
  • A mouse can get threw a hole the size of a dime, there is only one way to get rid of the smell scrub from front to back every where ,and I mean every square inch.

    Not if they are dead!

If while in storage you had the power cord hooked up that is the perfect path!! When I needed to replace the rear 6' of floor in our 86 King of the Road, found a couple mummified mouse bodes under the power box, nice and warm place to die.
  • Don't overlook the obvious. We had a problem with smell one time and took a look everything we could. Turned out a mouse fell into a glass vase and couldn't jump out and that was where we found the moldy ball of fur.

  • I read somewhere that rodents either have very small or no bladders so they "leak" wherever they go. That is likely what you are smelling. Cleaning up the pellets are only half the battle. When my old TT got invaded, I steam cleaned the carpets and upholstery and wiped down every surface with disinfectant.

It is a dirty and relentless job as I had to remove the inspection panel under the shower, pull the furnace apart, remove all inspection panels, and pull all the drawers to clean behind and under them. They also got into the oven and shredded the insulation in places so I had to pull it and clean and re-wrap the insulation. I also removed the underbelly material and cleaned out the pellets under there.

Our TT was struck first when it was only 6 months old by rats at the storage facility despite the fact it was winterized and there was no food inside. That was a mess and my DW probably wouldn't ever set foot in it again if she had seen what I saw. The second time was at a different facility and the mice mess was significant but no where near as bad as the rat problem. That time the TT was also winterized with no food inside, We still store our new (to us) Class C there but have moved away from the edge of the lot where it abuts the woods and parked in the center of the lot. In 2 years we have had no rodent problems.

Also be sure to wear a mask during the clean-up. Hantavirus is not something you want to contract.
  • You really just have to use a powerful flashlight and look in any nook & cranny you can find or get access to. If you find the offender remove it and clean the area really well.

Next step is to try and plug up any holes size of your pinky finger or bigger where the rodents can get in. Steel wool is good for plugging holes where it's difficult to use wood or other material to cover it. Expanding foam won't stop them.

Other option is to find an industrial air freshener designed to mask these types of smells. Something like this http://www.scoe10x.com/ A little goes a long way.

Eventually the smell will go away on it's own (months or year)
  • can't help with the furnace, every one is differant, but I'll bet there are a bunch laying on the plastic coply ( the cover that covers the bottom of the trailer). I know i've got them in there, but i'm blessed with the lack of smell so no biggy. Take the bottom off and look for where they get in, little bas****ds Great stuff works well to seal them out.
