Mice in the trailer - first time in 11 winters

Went to the trailer today just to do a quick check and @#$%^& mice. First time in 11 winters with this trailer and never had them in the first trailer either.

They are in one of the utensil drawers. I think they are frozen because when I opened the drawer they didn't move or scurry away, just stayed curled up in the shredded dish and wash clothes. I am pretty sure if they were not frozen they would have scurried away before I got the drawer open.

Guess I need to go and clean up the mess tomorrow and put in some mouse traps. Any suggestions for cleaning and disinfecting things?

Fortunately a quick look and it seems like 2 in the drawer, some shredded wash, dish clothes and no droppings anywhere else. Maybe I got lucky because it has been super cold here for a couple of weeks. I sure hope so.
  • Put in 2 snap traps today. Will check in a couple of days to see if I have caught anything. There are 3 dead frozen mice so far that I can see. Will need to clean the trailer then. Lots of mouse droppings to clean up. Been a few months since I checked the trailer. Now I just hope it doesn't stink come spring.
  • For clean up, I've had great results with Simple Green. Seems to soften the drag trails and urine while deodorizing at the same time. Since we sealed up the rig and used all the gimmicks , no more clean up necessary.

    Thanks Paul,

I have lots of that at home. Will try that full strength. Just want to make sure that it disinfects as well though

  • For cleanup use Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer. It gets rid of odor and residue completely, which is vital if you don't want mice to return. If any odor remains, other mice will smell it and think that's where the party is.

    Clicky

Many pet supply stores also carry it.

Thanks. That is a great thought. I have something similar for the dog and it works great. Didn't even think of that.

Always worried about poisoned mice afraid the pet may find them later then I got more than a mouse issue
  • Here's my trick to catching mice. It's a little involved, but works really well. Take a piece of elbow macaroni and feed a piece of dental floss through it. Using a toothpick, fill the inside of the macaroni with peanut butter. Tie the macaroni to the bale of a standard wooden mouse trap with the dental floss. Set the trap. The mouse will smell the peanut butter and try to pull the macaroni off the trap, which doesn't end well for the mouse. If you've ever had problems with mice licking the trap clean and not snapping it, give this a try.

That is a really good idea. So far no mice in the traps and they have not moved. I think they are all frozen. Found 6 and the were rock solid due to the severe cold snap we have been having. They also had a stash of corn from the field. Just need to clean up the droppings once it warms up a bit and then leave the traps set until we use it again.
  • I found that wide-trigger "JAWZ" traps places along corners where mice path work pretty well.

Another thing is that if you fill your toilet and sink with RV antifreeze, you might find mousesickles in there. I don't recommend flushing them down, especially if you have a macerator pump.
