Michelin M/S-2 LT's

I bought a set of Michelin M/S-2 LTs for my 2010 2500 Chevy with 6.0 engine and 3.73 rear end about 1 1/2 years ago. Rotated, twice 1st at 12k and just recently at 22k on the tires. If I remember correctly they came with about 15/32 tread. After 22k miles they are down to 9/32. I do not run my tow tires below 5/32. So after 22k miles they are already 60% worn out. I was hoping to get better mileage out of these tires. I tow with 65psi in front and 80psi in rear. When not towing I run 55 in front and 65 in rear.

I have had lots of Michelin tires on cars with very good results. This is my 1st set of Michelin tow tires. I was expecting better wear than this. I have noticed in the past with my tires that they wear slower as the tread wears down, probably due to less squirm.

If they keep wearing like this I will only get about 40k out of them. If I do have to buy a new set of tires at 40k I may go back to Bridgestone.

Any suggestions/comments?
  • I stopped running Michelin and went to Toyo on all of our vehicles. Have the Open Country A/T on the truck and they are great tires. Less expensive and work better for me in my application. Also have 65k on the Toyos on my daily driver and they are at 3/32. I will replace them before the winter and they are almost half the price of Michelin. Good luck with your decision.
  • I think new , the tires had either 11/32nds or 13/32nds tread.
  • And when NOT towing, I run 65 in the front and 50 in the rear. At 45, my TPM system keeps going off and it's annoying. I already had the Ford dealer reprogram so that I could do 50 without the low tire pressure alerts. I should have asked them to set it lower.
  • I know a bit about this. I WAS running the same tires as you on my F350. The tires came with a 70K warranty and I only got about 35 out of them. Discount Tires gave me rebate on the difference of my actual miles vs the warranty miles. Enough to drop my cost $123 on each tire.

Michelin is aware their warranty is overstated. Because of this, Michelin has stopped production of the LTX M/S 2 tires and will not be making them anymore. They have been replaced by Defender LTX M/S with a 50,000 mile tread life warranty. They both have virtually identical tread patterns. Despite the Defender having a lower tread life, they have modified the rubber compound to make it wear longer that the 70,000 mile warranty LTX M/S 2.

So as of 2 weeks ago, I now have the Defender and you wouldn't know the difference by looking at them. I would swear that the rubber is a little harder and the tires don't grip as much. Could be my imagination, but they did make the rubber compound longer lasting after all.
  • Solo you are running too little air in front should be at least 65 and too much in the rear should be 45.

Towing stick to 65 front as the front only adds no more than 100# that is if you tow a 5er. Rears weigh your loaded rear axle then use weight/inflation chart for your tires and add 5psi.

MS2's on the front of my RAM dually with 40K running 80psi never rotated.

  • I run Michelin LTX AT/2.....less aggressive than the MS

    2007 RAM 3500 weighs 7800/non tow & 10400/tow
Run 55# front ALL the time
Run 45# rear (non towing) and 80# (towing 5th wheel....heavy pin)

I get 60,000 PLUS miles on a set and I don't rotate tires. Just balance yearly.
  • I like Michelin tires on my MH. I never much cared for Michelin on a PU. They seemed more like highway tires. In WY where we have a lot of gravel roads I had too many flat tires with Michelin tires. Oil well PUs use a lot of Toyos. I like Hankook. Those sharp rocks go right through Michelin tires.
  • When I had my 2004 version of the same truck, I ran the same tires you have. I would get about 45K-50K miles on them when I had to replace them at around 3/32. I never found another tire that lasted longer.
