A lot of it is the auto makers needing to improve the fleet economy of the cars and trucks they sell. Stick a diesel engine in a SUV and it gets 30 MPG instead of 20 MPG and the customer pays the price for the more expensive engine, more expensive maintenance, and more expensive fuel. Lots of gullible people and the American auto makers are not known for holding back when there is a buck to be made regardless of the cost to the public.
