They will be here to stay. Actual market penetration could be all over the place depending on:
1. Diesel vs. gasoline fuel price in USA.
2. Cost of the vehicle diesel option.
3. Real world fuel economy results.
4. User friendliness of the engines (reliability, maintenance costs, torque/power, etc.)
