Mustang towing. 2 down?

We are looking our first class C. And trying to figure out what to use as a towed vehicle. We have a Mustang that we want to use. I know I could tow it on a trailer. All four wheels off the ground. But I was hoping I could tow to backwards with the rear wheels up. Sounds simple enough. Back it up on a two wheel trailer. Is this possible? Legal?
I did try to search this but I could not locate an answer.

  • Be sure the tow dolly you use has a pivot for the wheels to turn instead of being fixed and relying on car steering. I also bet your spoiler will be gone first time you tow.
  • Possible? Yes. It has been done, may very well be being done as we type, and will be done in the future.
Illegal? Not to my rather limited knowledge, so long as there are red lights and reflectors on the vehicle.
As stated, make sure the steering is firmly tied so the wheels are in the straight forward position. I strongly recommend that you do NOT attempt to rely on the built in steering wheel lock. It probably is not strong enough.
  • Might also want to get some red reflectors that you can put on the front (magnetic?) while towing. Might confuse some people following if towing at night when they don't see the reflectors that are built into all taillights.
  • It is possible and I've never heard of it being illegal.

Probably all dolly manufacturers will recommend you don't tow backwards.

I wouldn't try it I would bite the bullet and trade/buy a more practical toad. Or a trailer if you have the towing capacity.
  • Also the rear overhang on most cars is longer then the front. So there could be a problem rubbing on tow dolly when you try to back up ramps. Could possibly be solved with some extra blocking to extend ramps to make incline less.
  • The manufacturer of my tow dolly says explicitly in the manual to not do that. No explanation as to why or to what damage, if any, might occur. If you are going to try it, make sure the steering is locked and I would try a few short trips first. Depending on what year and style Mustang you have, you might end up dragging the front spoiler on the ground.
  • I have seen backassward towing in a couple of instances. don't know the front end dynamics whether extended movement the wrong direction would affect anything.
