Don't you have a low point drain? I would just open that and allow the water to drain out on its own. Its really not a big deal at all. They are designed to hold water, they are designed to transport water and the pump is designed to pressurize your lines. Everything was doing what it was supposed to do.
Not trying to trivialize this, but I don't understand the point of getting your dander up because the water tank was full. Dump the water and continue along your way. No sense getting worked up over something so minor, in my opinion.
