Having worked retail for many years, I have found that "attitude" is contagious. It doesn't matter who was rude to begin with, once that happens, SOMEONE needs to grow up, stop and breathe, and say "I'm sorry, let's both back up and calm down". As I can't force anyone else to do that, then I do it myself. Doesn't matter who started it - I'm going to stop it. I find that almost always turns the conversation around and gets me better help than I expected in the first place. My "taking the blame" so to speak has the tendency to get the employee on my side.
