Pump can stay on forever if there is water in the tank. It wouldn't run unless there was a leak, or you turned a faucet on to use some water. We always keep water in the tank. Have had a couple times that pipes in the supply lines to a campground burst and the city/county had to shut water off and put new lines in, so no water at the campground for over 24 hours. We had water though, could still flush the toilet, take a shower etc when all campground facilities were down. We also use water when traveling to wash hands, flush toilet etc. Never without water in the tank.
