My family thinks we've lost our minds

Not everyone's family is understanding and thinks this RV'ing thing is a great idea. My sister is one of those who think DH and I are to use technical terms - NUTS! (Personally, I think if we move up to a 5 wheel in a few years with more bells and whistles, she might have a change of mind.)

DH's kids, one of whom loves to camp and rough it, thinks its great for us. His sister at least pretends its a good thing.

How did your family react when you took the plunge, especially later in life like us?
  • Inform them your estate planner left you only two options. 1. Spend your hard earned money however you want to and enjoy your life. OR, 2. Leave your money to your relatives when you die. Then tell them you did a careful examination of potential heirs and decided it would be wrong to leave any money to the crazy collection of relatives you have accumulated, therefore you bought the RV.

Families are families. Not every person will think what we do in any venue is the right thing. But, you don't live their lives, you live yours. So, who cares what they think.

Most people become jealous when somebody else actually stops talking about doing what it takes to get off the couch and starts living. Most people never get past the dream stage and make the effort to get into implementation. So there comes the envy from those that will never lift a finger to do what they really want to do and always do what is expected of them by others. I hope nobody on this forum is looking for approval from family or relatives (or anybody) to go RVing.
  • Our kids and their spouses were raised camping in some sort of RV, they have been in them all. They now own either 5th wheels or TT's.

Well, when we said we were buying a new TT they almost fell over. For the last 15 years we have used our tent. We love it and always said, we don't need a RV and all the stuff. We camped on the ground in snow while they were in their RV's

Now we are quite a few years away from retirement. I am at home, so I guess it is hubby's retirement we are talking about, 15 years or more. We were out one day and hubby said, we are buying a TT. I am now tired of camping on the ground.
About a month later we had our TT and kids looking bewildered.
  • My parents both believed that relatives were people that you normally would not choose as friends. Unless you borrowed money from them to buy it, their opinion, good or bad, is worth as much as mine - not one thin dime.
  • We had talked about a Class A since the Clark Cortez hit the market and by the time we bought our Bounder in 1998, most friends loved the idea. Our DDs are a little jealous but our SILs have no desire. Almost all think our little ten week trips are fantastic. Nothing but support from close friends and family. DGD wants a teardrop for graduation from HS, DGS wants a better tent.
  • We had camped with our family for many years and they have plans of following in our footsteps themselves when retirement time comes. As for ourselves, we are already following the lifestyle my parents adopted when they retired. Yes our kids understand it perfectly.

Most of them thought we were nuts when we went full time, 7 years ago.

Now, some of them have changed their tune and are showing jealousy at the fun we are having.
  • I never got a response from any family member when we bought our RV.
Some will think you are nuts for buying a Ford, Chevy, Foreign car, whatever, etc..
It's all opinion, and we all know about opinions.
And, most importantly, I don't care what they think or say.
It's not their money or concern. :)
