Interesting ... not so much this is such a novel idea, interesting because I've been doing this for years and never thought anything about it. Actually, when building a campfire, I've always done the Lincoln log style build. But at home, in the fireplace, this is pretty much the only way I've ever done it. Heaviest logs on the bottom, smaller as I go up, and kindling on top. Makes for a really great way to get the fire going in the fireplace. I don't know why I never thought of doing it when camping?
