I notice minimal difference in MPG between 65 MPH and 70 MPH (like less than 1 MPG). And not a lot of difference between 70 and 75. I won't drive below 65 because speed limits ar 75 - 80, and anything below 65 seems borderline unsafe, and WAY too slow.
That's like paying 25 to 40 cents more per gallon of fuel. I set the cruise at 63 and forget about the winners circle. I am not sure the purse is in these races.
Here is how the math works for me:
My rig gets 12 MPG on almost every single vacation I have taken in the last 20 years. Since I only get 2 to 3 weeks vacation a year depending, I have to roll fast, since most of my relatives live in the mid west.
In 5000 miles at 12 MPG I burn 416 gallons of diesel. At $2.35 bucks a gallon (The national today) that is $977 bucks in fuel for my vacation. At 11 MPG I burn 454 gallons of diesel. A difference of 38 gallons of diesel fuel in 5000 miles. So just a little over one tank of fuel for me.
A wooping $90 dollar difference in my vacation costs over 5000 miles if I travel fast.
I know people that spend more than that for lunch. :R
