Mystery bathroom switch

OK so I am hoping someone here can help me out. I have a 2008 Weekend Warrior FSC 2800. In the bathroom there are two switches right next to each other on the wall. One operates the light. The second seems to have no function at all. I pulled the switch plate out today thinking maybe I could run my fan wires through the switch and wouldn't you know it there are wires connected to it! Now I only have 1 light in the bathroom and the only other electrical items are the fan which is operated by a bottom on the fan mount itself and a built in blow dryer which has a switch on the handle.

Does anybody have any idea what the second switch is supposed to be fore?

Thanks
  • Turn on the fan then flip the switch. That is how ours was wired...
  • It's not the water pump switch. Water pump switch is on the main panel and I know what it sounds like.
  • Turn the switch on and listen for the water pump. It makes a purring sound. Or maybe not, because if you don't know what switch does and you have left it on, the water pump may have burned up by now.
  • Hmmmmm. Well i dont think my water heater has an electric function (propane only and that switch is on the main panel) but it could be a bad switch. Ill try pulling one of the wires and seeing if the fan still works.

    Thanks

    Same for me.

Mine too but it has a light in it to show it is on.
  • If the switch is identical to the light switch, it's a switch that originally ran to the exhaust fan. Although it has wires attached to the switch, they were probably disconnected at the fan, and the fan was wired in direct, thus using the switch on the fan, not the wall any more. It's possible the wall switch failed, and a replacement could not be found that match. So it was just wired around the switch.

Either that, OR... the switch has failed in the "ON" position. No matter which way you flip the switch, it's "ON", thus, needing to use the switch on the fan to turn it off. Disconnect one of the wires from the switch and see if the exhaust fan is disabled.

  • Might be to turn on the electric element in the water heater.
