Need to figure out how to have my port flushed on the road

While experiencing an open time period in treatment of ovarian cancer, we are leaving Florida for six months. However, I have a port embedded in my chest that should be flushed out once a month. Trying to make arrangements for this, we have discovered we will need a doctor's appointment for the state followed by medicare and insurance verification and then an appointment for the flush. Initial discussion in San Antonio revealed it would take longer than the week we plan to spend in San Antonio to accomplish this.

Has anyone else had this problem and come up with a solution? Will just walking into an emergency room work?

I appreciate any suggestions....

  • When I traveled wot my port in, I called the nurse agency that did it when at home position. I let hem arrange it because as you know it takes a specialist train in the sterile procedure. You might want to ask the agency if they have someone near or can arrange it. It only took a couple of days to get someone in Texas last time (two years ago).
  • Check Santa Rosa Hospital in SA. We used the one off 151 for the wife's emergencies with her dialysis. The people there are very nice and will work with you and your insurance. I think they have a website where you can ask your questions. They are across the street from SeaWorld.
  • Wife on/off Chemo for 4 years now and when she'll call a Cancer center in the area, tell them what she needs, and make an appointment. They told her every 4 to 6 weeks and we've never had a problem with Medicare covering the cost.
  • I think a doctor at an urgent care facility should be able to handle this.
