If you'd hit him from behind, you would have pushed him forward. Not likely you would have killed him or especially yourself. Both vehicles can take a tremndous hit in that situation.
Besides, it doesn't matter. It's you and your family or him. You make the best choice for your own.
But I understand that split second decision in such a abnormal situation. You did OK and all is well.
Glad it worked out ok.
