Funny you brought it up! Just pulled into Death Valley today. Been camping the the few nights along the way.
So, loaded up for our extended trip we stopped at the scales. Hauled 3/4 full water and 10 gallons in the black tank. We were 20 lbs over rear axle weight and also 20 lbs over our max payload. That was full propane and full gas in the truck. Total trailer weight was about 500 lbs below max tow rating. This is the heaviest we have ever towed. Also turned out to be the lightest tongue weight about 11%.
So as it was in the beginning, payload is the issue. For our normal 2-3 days trips no problem. We hauled water since we weren't sure of the water status this early in the season.
This Sequoia will last is another year, maybe two if I keep the pencil sharp. We all test drove a 2016 F150 Lariat with 1700 lbs of payload available. I hate to say it but it felt soft. I didn't get the impression at all that it would tow better than the Sequoia. The air suspension and the ability to stiffen it up electronically is really, really nice. The Sequoia is 6000lbs empty compared to 5500? For the F150. Going to see what the new expedition has for payload. It will have the new 10 speed and bigger ecoboost. The Suburbans are able 1400 lbs, not enough for a change and their motors are as powerful.
I would love to have the new 10 speed in the F150. That being said, we just towed into Death Valley fully loaded. Not an easy tow at all, and it did great. Tranny and temp gauge didn't budge with air on and 85 degrees.
Might be able to get another notch on the weight distribution hitch. At the scale it put 80 lbs back on the front axle and 20 lbs on the trailer.
