When that reasoning is carried to it's extreme it becomes: It is not safe to even CARRY a propane bottle on/in a vehicle.
There will not be a major problem unless the system ruptures at or near to the tank, before the first regulator. The odds of that happening are extremely low because of the factors already mentioned.
Carry a propane tank that is turned off is a lot safer than having the gas tank wide open and running an appliance with an open flame. If you're in an accident, you're more likely to have a fire or worse . I hear you all saying it rarely happens.As I have explained in my experiences as an electrician. People do stupid stuff all the time.And you may get away with it.But I have seen fires caused by faulty or sloppy wiring. Take a chance if you want. But I still say it isn't a good idea.In fact it's a dumb idea.
