We switched from ATT to Vrizon because wherever we went on vacation we had no service! With Verizon we have had service everywhere we went!
That was our experience as well, but it depends a lot on where you commonly go.
We do get better coverage with verizon, but there are still enough spots where verizon/CDMA coverage is gone, but ATT/GSM is there that having both is very nice.
And then there are the spots with no coverage when out in the back country where we carry a spot messenger in case we need emergency help or to SMS the kids where we are.
So, the ATT backup with Onstar has been very handy.
But if your commonly around major metropolitan areas, not likely an issue with either carrier.
We go to the Wisconsin Dells once a year (a very major tourist destination in the mid west). when we had ATT we could not get a signal unless we were in the immediate downtown area. My wife`s girl friend would go with us, she has Verizon, and had a signal as far away as 7 miles outside of town in the campground where ATT had nothing. We found this at many places we went too!
But back on topic, either way a phone in any car gives you WiFi. so no need to have it built in! heck...... when anyone gets into any old car it has WiFi!
