After also trying a freestanding AT&T WiFi hotspot which didn't work any better, I tried a Sprint hotspot fully expecting it not to work either. Guess what - it has worked fine in almost every place we have camped. Oddly, it usually only shows 1 or 2 bars but provides a good fast connection.

When I went full time I purchased a Sprint USB mobile broadband for my internet on the road. Which is now over 8 years old!
I have had service in EVERY place I have traveled! And still use it as my main source for internet in my winter home.
Yesterday I used a neighbors computer in their house. They always yack about what they pay for super high speed internet connection......my old Sprint USB broadband is WAY faster! Go figure.
sprint/verizon jetpacks are definitely the way to go for wifi. better than using the cell as a hotspot. run longer and better service than using the phone.
however, come over to our house and try to get reception with sprint. Nada.. zip. Verizon yes, ATT yes, sprint nope, won't even switch to the verizon tower to roam.
I guess we travel enough places that we've had spots were either GSM (ATT etc.) or CDMA (verizon sprint etc.) service is not available. so having both is worthwhile for us.
