New to Toad Towing

I'm finally getting my 2006 Honda CRV set up for towing. One of the things my service manual says is that for every 4 hours of towing I have to start the car and cycle through the transmission.
My question is this:
Do I have to disconnect anything prior to performing this? I.E. 7 pin connector, tow bar etc.

I'm smart enough to make sure I have the brake set and my foot on the brake when doing this so that much I already know. Just need to know if there's anything else I should be aware of.

Thanks!!!
  • I just bought a 2013 CRV for towing and it says 8 hours like the others.

There is also a pretty cheap battery exchange you can do, so that the tiny little CRV battery doesn't go dead. The battery box and base of a Honda Odyssey ($15.00) fits in the CRV battery hole and lets you upgrade the motor cycle size battery to a Group 24. I did the mod and bought an Interstate Group 24 at Costco for $100.00. Now, no worrying about dead batteries after towing.
  • I had to stop and run my Toad also.

Read your manual on where all gear shifts should be placed 'when towing' and 'when running' it.

I didn't read my manual thoroughly and for the first 1,000 miles or so I faithfully started it every 250 miles but I was not putting the gear shift in the right spot so it was never circulating.

Some you have to move one of them to have it circulate. I had to on my 4x4 Tracker. And I didn't even get in the car I just reached in and started it because the transfer case stayed in neutral so the tires do not move. No need to unhook.

I pulled into a CG and before setting up I started the Toad.......4 hours later I remembered it was still running. :W
  • I would hope not on your 06. My 04 is 8 hours and the procedure is all about tranny lubrication and setup for towing. No need to disconnect anything.
