New trailer

The wife and I want to bye a 5er.
We now have a tag along.
The big question is besides the rails and receiver do I need a new
tailgate or can we pull with the oem gate in place.
THANK YOU FOR THE ADVISE.
  • The notched tailgate is definitely an optional item. I have one because it is one less thing for me to remember. That is important for us with CRS Syndrome. :)
  • One time my father in law forgot to put chocks under the wheels on a slopping site plus he had not put down the front legs of the 5th wheel. I think it was the excitment of seeing his grandkids after not seeing them for a couple of years that he was in a hurry to get the camper unhooked from the truck and he reached over and pulled the handle releasing the 5th wheel. Off it went down the hill the only thing that kept it from going into the woods was the OEM tailgate. Had he had one of those 5th wheel style tail gates grandma and the 2 grandkids would have had a wild ride.....

Yes ... by all means make sure you have a 3/4 ton or above truck if your gonna pull a 5er around!
  • I have a F350 Crew Cab Short Box with a GN adapter and have no issues at all. Just remember to raise and lower it.
  • I have a short bed 3/4 ton 2007 Dodge 4x4. I use the OEM tailgate and a pullrite superglide hitch. No problems at all.
  • No dropgate needed for towing.
Be diligent about raising and lowering though.
  • You'll love the 5th wheel towing experience provided you have a good 3/4 ton or above truck with either a long bed or a short bed with a PullRite SuperGlide hitch. Go fer it!
  • Just don't forget to open and close when you hook and unhook.
