Back in my college days, the grad students in chemistry used a glass funnel and Whitman #1 filter paper to make coffee in beakers. They quit doing that after one of them mistook a beaker full of chromic acid for coffee and died.
But we have both a Melita cone filter and holder that amounts to the same thing. We also have a stainless steel stove-top percolator, and prefer that whenever more than 1 cup of coffee is needed.
