I'm not prone to motion sickness but have a daugher who is and have my fair share of time at sea where I've observed others really struggle. The key is staying ahead of the curve. Your son must take dramamine, patch, whatever, before he feels sick.
Once he feels sick, medicine will not help. I've watched Sailors try to tough it out and my daughter will protest she feels fine but that is the wrong approach if someone is prone to motion sickness.
