Did you check to see if by opening relief valve water comes out of it?
Yes I did, cold water inlet seems to be ok, but I bought 2 check valves and will change both while I have it apart.
You say "both check valves" There is usually only one on the outlet. If you have a brass fitting on the cold water inlet it is probably just a nipple. No need for a check valve on the inlet.
There are check valves on both the cold water inlet and the hot water outlet. So as long as I have it apart I'll replace both valves.
UPDATE: to water heater check valve replacement. All is back together and work as it should. O-ring on old valve had departed it's groove. How long ago is anyone guess as the valve itself showed wear. Someone said channel locks would take the old brass unit out, how wrong they were. Even with a 1" box end wrench it would not loosen till after a little heat was applied. There was not much room to swing a wench in the area either. Hard enough to get both hands in there at once. Thanks for everyones help. Job done!
