No shower surround/insert??

My new Coachman Clipper has a tub and shower, but no shower surround. The material on the shower walls are the same as the walls throughout the camper. The seams are caulked so I assume the material can get wet?

Anyone have any comments on this? Is this fairly common? Every other camper I see has a surround/insert.

  • Is contacting the manufacturer or dealer on the list of things to do? If you do it in an E mail..then you have a written record of their responses, should a problem occur later.

  • Thanks for the responses guys. I feel a bit better. I can't believe I didn't notice this right away, LOL.

    I like your idea spoon.
  • Our last TT was the same way with the vinyl walls throughout the trailer and no surround.
We used the shower on every trip and never had any problem with the walls. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an other RV built that way.
  • We noticed this on our camper when we first bought it. Looked into purchasing one from the tub manufacturer, but different things came up and we never did. The camper is one three years old and no problems have occurred. We do whipe the shower down after we use it (takes like 10seconds!). I don't think we'll get the surround.
  • Our first Cherokee didn`t have an enclosure, just the walls like you. never an issue because it was waterproof. it is standard on lighter weight trailers. not an issue!
  • I owned a 1990 Jayco Eagle (they only made one model of Eagle that year) and it had no plastic in the shower. Mostly because we didn't know any better we used it for 10 years. Every time we finished, we towel dried the enclosure and never had a problem. The wall material was the same as the rest of the trailer--luan with a plastic wall paper type covering glued to it. If I were you, I'd follow the suggestion above and do the mod described, just to be safe and it'll probably look better too.
  • Sounds weird... I would buy some FRP panels from Home Depot or Lowes and put those up to protect the walls.

They are waterproof, you can buy corner kits to make a clean install and caulk the joints. The regular walls aren't waterproof enough to make me sleep well at night. They are usually just luan plywood with a little bit of paper on the show side.
