Noticed something this weekend

Me and my wife were looking at Class C motorhomes, and looked at a new Winnebago Class C and then just fun looked at a Winnebago Class A in the same length.... It was identical inside as the Class C! Except for the front of course, i was really surprised that a manufacturer would build the same interior layout as a Class C... I just figured that the Class A would be a little bit different somehow on the inside... But that's just my thinking......

  • Allowing that MHs come in various lengths, therefore requiring multiple choices of patterns and colors. And if you install sleeping, eating, bathing facilities they have to go somewhere and in the end all that matters is the buyer gets the colors and locations of the amenities he wants.
  • You will find that all the MH's Class C and Class A have 98% the same interior amenities and 'same' appliances, water heaters, water pumps, etc., sans the higher priced ones slap some Cherry Cabinets in them and a leather couch here and there.

Makes me just laugh. IMHO the only difference is one you sit behind the motor and one you sit on top of it! Except for the DP, totally different animal there, but the innards of the interior are still all the same! :W
  • When I was shopping, the Winnebago Sightseer had the same interior equipment, trim materials, and color options as the Minnie. The (same price as Minnie) Itasca Spirit had different materials and colors from the Minnie, but same as Itasca Sunova.

I expect if I looked closely at one level up, MinnieWinnie vs Voyage, I would have seen the similarities there, but I wasn't shopping at that level.

Interior layout similarities are even more common, for manufacturers that make both C's and matching size A's. The overlap used to be limited, 29-32 feet, but there will be more size overlap now as the smaller size A's come back on the market.
  • Since the cab in the A sits over the engine instead of behind it like a 'C', the same length A's probably have more 'RV' space available, but not $20,000 worth in my opinion.

In light of that trend, I'm hopeful to someday see a Class G, priced $40,000 lower than the C! :D
  • As was mentioned above, there are only so many ways that you can lay out a certain size space. I noticed that my 2000 Winnie was identical in lay-out to the 2009....and probably all of the other 31' units. They found a floorplan that works, and they stick with it.
Sure, the cabinets and curtains will probably change over time or with models, but the floor plan will usually be the same.

You may find (though maybe not) that the "A" has better quality appointments since many of the things like appliances and such are pretty standard......or you may find that everything is the same, since it's giving the mfgr the advantage of buying in bulk for ALL of the coaches.
  • I'm willing to bet you saw a Winnebago Via and a Winnebago View. Both are based on the Mercedes Sprinter Chassis.

Both have proven very popular. Some folks prefer the Class A, and some prefer the Class C models. There has been enough demand for each to keep them in production for three or four years. The Class A cost about $20,000 more than the Class C.

There is also a fairly new near identical floorplan gas class A running about 20K cheaper than the Winnebago Class C - the Thor Vegas and Axis RUV.
  • Given the space and dimensional restrictions of all RV's there's only a limited number of floor plans that can fit. There are minor variations of course, but the general layouts are really pretty limited. Given the same approximate length and width, I'm not surprised at all that a manufacturer would use essentially the same plan in a C that they use in an A.
  • They will catch there mistake later down the road :B
Some make like the advantage of having cab doors to enter and exit. I do.
