NY EZ-Pass - watch out!

NY EZ pass is issuing new transponders to replace old ones that may be failing soon due to battery life. Mine are 10 years old so I though it was great that they were being proactive. I received 2 replacements last Friday. Before sending back the originals I wrapped them in aluminum foil. I got burned for a toll back in '07 when I had to return an erroneous transponder to NY. They refused to refund my money.

Well I just got my statement today and one of the new transponders registered a toll in NY while it was in route to my mail box. I called and they are going to "look into it". Its not a lot of money but it is the principle. We will see how this turns out.

If you get new transponders from NY or anywhere else by mail check your account to be sure they are not getting free money from you.
  • Unbelievable! Some states will do anything to generate revenue. I hope that you get this straightened out. And thanks for reminding me to look at my account on the VA EZPass site to make sure that I don't have any surprises.
  • This happened to me once and EZ pass refunded my money without any problems.

I think it's far less sinister than that. State governments aren't always the brightest. Most likely it's just bad packaging precautions. If they were out to generate revenue, all transponders would register erroneous charges.
  • In 2012 All four of my NY EZ Pass transponders were replaced. It took me 4 months and numerous communications to get 35 of the $60 dollars in tolls back that rang up as the delivery trucks left NY and passed thru NJ.
First hand report from a Port Authority toll booth operator,,, multiple toll ring ups with many delivery trucks from ghost/phantom transponders in their cargo.

X2... It's happened twice to me, and the refunds were no hassle and quickly applied to my account. Now I double bag them in the signal blocking bags that E-ZPass supplies before returning them.
