Used to see a lot of that happen when I was at college in Bristol, Rhode Island. The gulls would drop them on the hard pavement to try and break 'em open for the meal inside.
Oh what I wouldn't do for a couple dozen roasted on the grill with an ice cold six pack! What cracks me up is there are so many clam shells that stores would used them as gravel in parking lots!
