This just happened to me last week on MLK day. Driving to work on I-5. Garbage truck with full size dumpster is in the lane on my right. More traffic on my left. Just as we're coming up to an underpass, the wind catches the metal lid on the dumpster and starts lifting it. The lid gets to just past straight up when it hits the freeway sign on the overpass. Breaks part of the sign off the overpass and rips the metal lid off of the dumpster. Sign hits front fender of SUV on my right. Metal lid lands in front of Chevy on my left, who hits it while it's still sliding down the freeway.
Me, I luck out and shoot the gap between these two pieces of sliding metal.
The good news is it was a holiday, so light traffic. If the lid had landed on a car, things could have gone badly. On a regular work day the traffic there would have been heavy enough that some one would have gotten a direct hit.
