About 20 years ago I was in my then nearly new Dakota when I came upon a couple of deer by the ditch. I slowed to about 15-20mph as the first one ran across. The second one hesitated and then ran right in front of me. As I slammed to a stop, it was jumping as I scooped it up the hood, over the windshield and roof. I looked into the rear view mirror just in time to see it falling into the pickup box. It stood up, jumped out and ran off. Scratched the hood, put a finger sized dimple in the front of the fender and dented the roof.
A coworker of mine ran out of gas once, not long after running over a deer carcass. It turns out the antler punctured his tank.
Recently near here a guy driving an Avalanche hit a herd of elk crossing the highway early in the morning. 11 dead elk (I think some had to be out down) and the guy was fine! Elk are not small animals. The wildlife department salvaged the meat. Link.
