Weirdest thing for me was years back after a visit to Maine, on the return trip coming through upstate New York late evening we encountered 10's of thousands of frogs crossing the road. The road was slick with frog guts and it lasted almost a quarter mile. Good thing it was dark out.
While we're talking odd, has anyone ever done the A1A coastal highway down around Miami in the March timeframe after dark? One night back in the early '80s, was returning from a drive to Miami and back up the east coast of Florida, and saw something similar, but it was thousands of crabs, crossing the road in their mating ritual. The road was a mess and I remember thinking I hope we don't hit something that will cut or puncture the tires. It was too late to stop when we realized what they were. They look like leaves blowing across the road which was what we thought they were at first.
