True for the old incandescent types but it does care about voltage. The standard house lamp is 120 volts. The DC lamps are 12 volt so you plug a 120 volt lamp into 12 it will be very very very very dim.
Most every hardware and automotive store sells standard edison base (Screw in) bulbs that look for all the world like a 100 watt 120 volt bulb till you read the label. 12 volts. they are usually rough service designed for drop lights (trouble lights) I have one around here somewhere.
