Speed does not seem to be the major contributing factor. Speed has increased over the years, and the motor vehicle death rate per driven mile is significantly lower in Germany than it is in the U.S. There must be other factors with a higher impact.
Driving is truly a privilege over there. They have some pretty strict rules. Running out of fuel on the Autobahn is enough to get your license removed for 6 months. It's not as easy to get a license over there either. Their licensing questions are somewhat tougher than ours. Questions like "How much drinking water can be polluted by one drop of oil" or "What increases the degree of centrifugal forces on a bend." A question may have 1 right answer or 4 and you have to select all of them to get credit. You have to score a 90% or higher to pass. When it's all said and done, you've spent around $1500 - $2000 to get your license. Most of that is in first aid and driving courses. It gets even more pricey if you fail to pass.
