Yes, when hauling firewood or other stuff back in the bad ol' days, we had two questions that had to be answered:
1. Will it move?
2. Will it stop?
If the answers to both questions was "YES", you were good to go.
If the answer to EITHER question was "NO", then you had to fix it, and you were good to go.
I had one of the old Kelsey-Hayes hydraulic trailer brake controllers. I installed it on several different pickups over the years, until they changed the brake systems and made it unusable. beyond a shadow of a doubt, it was the absolute BEST brake controller I have ever used. The cable operated controller I had on the '94 Dodge 3500 was almost as good, but they quit making them.

On a related note, I have one of the old U-Haul clamp-on trailer hitches, from back in the day when the rear bumper of a car was actually heavy steel. That thing is so heavy that I use it for weight when dragging the disc or spike tooth harrow around the pasture! Maybe some day it will be cut up to build something else.
